This paper examines the portrayal of aging women and their experiences of emotional isolation across Desai’s major novels, particularly Fire on the Mountain (1977), Clear Light of Day (1980), and Baumgartner’s Bombay (1987), with references to earlier works like Cry, the Peacock (1963) and Where Shall We Go This Summer? (1975). Through close textual analysis, the study highlights how aging exacerbates the invisibility of women within patriarchal family structures, societal neglect, and personal disillusionment. Nanda Kaul in Fire on the Mountain embodies the archetype of the embittered elderly recluse who constructs a facade of serene independence while concealing profound loneliness.
