Abstract

Network security is a complex topic that has traditionally only been handled by knowledgeable and skilled professionals. However, a growing number of people must comprehend the fundamentals of security in a networked environment as more and more people get "wired." The basic computer user and information systems manager was the target audience for this document, which explains the principles required to see through the marketing hype and comprehend hazards and how to handle them. An overview of TCP/IP and how the internet operates is given, along with some background information on networking. We then discuss firewalls, network threats, risk management, and other specialized safe networking equipment. This is not meant to serve as a reference or a guide explaining how to carry out particular tasks. It is hoped that people will have a broader perspective on security and discover better strategies for controlling and reducing risk in their homes, personal life, and at work.

Keywords: TCP/IP, UUCP, firewall, denial of service, cryptography, network security, and UDP.
